An Interesting Menu

One of things I love and find so funny within all families, including mine, is the private language that develops.  So much so I had to laugh when the youngest had a friend over last week for lunch and when asked what he wanted to eat, he happy requested a ‘comfortable sandwich'.

"Sorry Sweetheart," I said, "You want a what?"

"A comfortable sandwich" he repeated.

I was a bit confused so asked a friend who was over for coffee and she confirmed he wanted a comfortable sandwich.

It reminded me about a similar conversation that I know took place about three years ago between my eldest and one of my dearest friends.  The youngest was hospitalised for five days and as my husband worked weird hours and I was stuck at the hospital with a sick baby, he stayed at this friends house until time off could be arranged for the other half.  He was fine and felt like the whole thing was an adventure.  Everything went great until that first morning he went downstairs to have breakfast.

"What would you like to eat for breakfast?" she asked him.

"Pizza toast" he replied

She was blown away.

"Pizza toast?" she replied.  Visions of having to put cheese and sauce on some type of bread came to her.  I suppose she also wondered what she had gotten herself into when she only had 45 minutes until she had to drop him and her daughter off at school.  Thankfully he was very articulate for a five year old and could explain what ‘Pizza Toast' was.  (toast that is buttered while still hot so that it was melted) But we had such a laugh when she told me, then I bemused her when I then filled her in on other family words so that she would be prepared.

"What do you have on a comfortable sandwich?"

"Cheese, but it had to be comfortable." He replied a bit annoyed that I had no idea what he actually wanted.

I sent a text to his mum, who was at work busy and couldn't get back to me, so I made him a cheese sandwich and cut off the crusts and he ate two bites then ran off to play.  She walked up to my door an hour later and laughed at me as I pulled open the door and apologised that he didn't have much lunch.

"What is a comfortable sandwich?" I asked her.

"A sandwich with soft bread"
