The Point of Fathers Day?
Prince Charles once made a joke (when asked whether he would be supporting Diana during the imminent birth of their first child) along the lines of “Well, err, one was there at the conception, so I suppose one had better be there at the birth.”
Mildly amusing for a royal, I thought at the time, but little did he know that hot on the heels would be my son, Bad-Dad Junior, who has a penchant for getting the wrong end of the stick at times.
Driving along with his little sister (5) and Mum, little sister enquired as to how some women had babies if they weren’t married.
Mum, without even swerving for an instant, replied (somewhat brilliantly I felt) that there must have been a man involved at some point in the process.
At which point, B-D J explained “Of course, stupid! Who else is going to drive her to the hospital?”
Ho hum. Somehow Mrs B-D remained on the road. Respect.
So maybe that is the sole point of Fathers’ Day. To commemorate our usefulness in driving our women to the hospital. That’s fair enough; perhaps Prince Charles wasn’t so stupid after all…
