Friends of Brighton and Hove Hospitals latest talk in the 'Doctor Talks' Series
Friends of Brighton and Hove Hospitals present "Doctor Talks" in liaison with the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Doctor Talks
Paediatric Medicine
Speakers: Dr John Trounce and Dr Paul Seddon, Consultant Paediatricians, BSUH.
"We would challenge any other speciality to match child health (Paediatrics) for diversity. Our patients may only have an age range of 19 years but without doubt they are the most important years of anyone's life in terms of establishing physical health, mental wellbeing and achieving potential in education and future contribution to life and society. The next fifty years of life will be affected for better or worse by the care in childhood. Of course, a large part of this care rests with the family and the paediatrician's role is very much to support and advise the broader family and not just the child. Our patients range from the most extreme preterm infant where the frontiers of medicine have improved survival beyond the wildest dreams of just thirty years ago to the recalcitrant adolescent crossing the threshold to adult life. As paediatricians we deal with every system in the body - most of us are not single organ specialists as is more common in adult physicians. We have dedicated paediatric surgeons and anaesthetists who have mastered the techniques of laparoscopic ("keyhole") surgery in the smallest of their charges. But against this back drop we must also remember that we are dealing with arguably the most vulnerable members of society and we have a role in terms of protection from harm and neglect" - Dr John Trounce
