School Food on our parents’ menu!

7th Jun 2009

Parents across the city are to be asked to speak up about school food issues affecting their families.

The Parents' Forum and Brighton & Hove Food Partnership are working together to gather the often strong opinions of parents about their children’s food and convert that energy and knowledge into positive change.

School food covers a much larger agenda than just school meals. It touches on for example; pupils growing and eating food from their school allotments, cookery lessons in class and at after-school cookery clubs, healthy breakfast clubs, visits to farms, supermarkets and of course, the school lunch.

Yes, our school meals are an emotive issue. Love or hate them,  free or paid for, at least they are now guaranteed to meet government-set nutrient standards for growing young people. We’ve come a long way since Mr Oliver led the charge on the benighted turkey twizzler. But still, there’s undoubtedly a long way to go. We at the Parents' Forum and Food Partnership are sure there are plenty of our city’s parents itching to have their say and throw their skills and knowledge into the fray.

If you are someone who has an opinion on school food, and perhaps the energy and commitment to stand up (or sit down..) and say/do something about it, then do get in touch. We will be sending this appeal out to all families in the city with plenty more detail on what we are planning in the near future.

But, if you don’t feel like waiting until then, you can register your interest in saying and/or doing something about food in schools now! Just send an email with:

Your first name & surname,  postal address  and telephone number.

PLUS - your top 4 school issues in order of importance.

To: info@bhparentsforum.org

And we will get back to you!

In next month’s e-newsletter we will give you more information on our plans and profiles of the people and organisations involved in the project.
