Influence Local Decision Making

10th Aug 2010

One of the easiest and most popular ways of engaging in the democratic process is to sign a petition. A petition or an e-petition is a quick and simple way to bring issues to the attention of your councillors and influence local decision making.

The council welcomes petitions and recognises that they can often do a lot of good. Offering residents and service users the chance to petiton is important - the council values their opininons and wants them to tell it what really matters. In return, the council will listen and take action.

More about the petition process

Petitions can be signed by any person of any age who lives, works or studies in the city or who uses services provided by the council.

Petitions must relate to what the council does or an improvement in the economic, social or environmental well-being of the area covered by Brighton & Hove Council or to matters which any of its partner authorities contribute.

Read the helpful 'How to petition the council - petition scheme' online or check out what e-Petitions are currently open on the website (http://present.brighton-hove.gov.uk/mgePetitionListDisplay.aspx?bcr=1). You can even sign an e-Petition if you wish - all that will be required is your basic personal information, this is to enable the council to verify the "signatures" collected are genuine. Only your name, no other details will be published on the website.

Submitting a petition

If you wish to submit a paper petition send it to the Democratic Services department at least ten days before the meeting at which you would like the petition to be presented. Alternatively, you can submit a petition online. You'll just need to provide us with basic personal information so that we can contact you about your e-Petition. The information will only be used for this purpose, although the council may need to pass your details to the relevant department to enable them to respond to the issues you raise.

For more information contact Democratic Services on 01273 291006.
