Brighton Mothers Tell Their Stories
Fridays in February & March
A unique series of workshops for mothers will run at the Tarner Children's Centre in Brighton from Friday 12th February. The workshops (running on 4 Fridays) are open to mothers interested in sharing and writing about their experiences. The workshops are funded by Brighton & Hove City Council as part of the Adult Learning Festival.
The local theatre organisation Livestock is organising the event and will kick-start it on the first day with a performance of :
Mothers Uncovered - The Naked Truth
'This is a show which expresses the paradoxes and dichotomies of being a mother. It's a staging of four interlocking monologues inspired by real interviews, and they certainly achieve a high degree of naturalism and believability, managing to be both touching and funny, with the character of Lisa - played by the show's creator Maggie Gordon-Walker - as the stand out performance. Encompassing breast feeding and frustration, love and fear, mothers and men, dreams and A&E visits, 'Mothers Uncovered' is perfectly pitched at its target audience, as attested by the laughter of recognition and various whispers of "I know exactly what she means" floating around the venue.' Three Weeks Magazine
The project leads to a second performance where written work from the course is performed or read by performers from the Livestock company. All workshops and performances are free.
Sessions take place from 1.15-2.45pm on Fridays 12th , 19th & 26th February and 5th & 12th March
at The Tarner Children's Centre, Morley St, Brighton BN2
The sessions on Feb 12th and Mar 12th are open to everyone.
The company will also present an extract of the performance in the Jubilee Library on Sat 20th March as part of the Spring Forward weekend.
