Do you volunteer with children or young people? Archived

26th Jun 2009

The Brighton & Hove Children and Young People's Trust is consulting on its draft People Development Strategy until 3 July 2009.

The strategy describes what all those who work or volunteer need to know and do to support children and young people safely and well in the city.

Please read the introductory notes and the draft strategy attached below and tell them what you think. At the end of the introductory notes there are a few questions - please either print off the sheets and return them to the address shown by 3 July 2009 or email us at info@bhparentsforum.org and we will pass on your responses.

Sorry for the tight deadlines with this one but we thought you would rather know about it and respond if you felt strongly about it.

Child Safety Week 2009 Archived

9th Jun 2009

Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is an organisation here in the UK devoted to reducing the numbers of deaths and injuries in children and young people.  Child Safety Week is their nationwide community education campaign.

Child Safety Week, June 22 - 28th 2009 is their nationwide community education campaign to highlight the dangers in everyday life to children and young people and how they can be prevented.

According to the CAPT website, over 2,000 children and young people are taken to hospital and around 6 of those die due to accidents.  They believe that most of these accidents can be prevented by making small changes around the house and by teaching your children to be diligent to any hazards around them.

We have not heard about any specific events around Brighton for Child Safety Week, but we will update our events calendar with any we do hear about.

In honour of Child Safety week we have brought together a few different sites dedicated to Child Safety.

Have you told us yet How Are We Doing? Archived

9th Jun 2009
We have heard from many of you since we opened our "How Are We doing?" questionnaire and have found the answers we have received so far helpful.  We are here to serve you, the parents of Brighton and Hove, but you need to tell us how well we are doing and what we may be missing.

We have received comments about lots of the aspects of the work we do .

Our Website

"Easy to navigate and full of information on everything you need."

"More support and advice for parents in the city who haven't much money"

Our E-Newsletter

"It's not too frequent and it's about local stuff."

"Sometimes I would like a bit more about what the article I'm going to click on is about, I think I have missed some important ones because I didn't know what they were about specifically."

Our Events

"I love them!"

"The event at Funplex was hugely oversubscribed and we had to wait a long time in the cold, unable to leave or the children would have been disappointed. I think hot drinks could have been provided and perhaps staggered timing."

We want to hear from you about what we are doing wrong as much as what we are doing right as we take our responsibilities to our fellow parents in our city very seriously.

So please visit our questionnaire, ‘How are we doing?' and tell us what you think.  You may just win a £50 shopping voucher at the same time as you help us serve you better.

We will be closing this competition on June 19th at 12pm and will be contacting the winner by July 3rd.

Community Engagement Framework Archived

8th Jun 2009

The 2020 Community Partnership has developed a Community Engagement Framework for the City. The Framework is the key reference for community engagement activity by the 2020 Community Partnership. It sets out the strategic aims and guiding principles for community engagement within Brighton &  Hove and the priority actions that need to be taken to improve engagement activity.

The 2020 Community Partnership has developed the Framework in order to: -

  • Improve the ways in which citizens and communities can influence and shape services
  • Set a common standard for all engagement activity in the City that all partners are signed up to
  • Provide more support to communities to resolve their own issues and possibly run services for themselves
  • Improve co-ordination of activity in the City between different agencies and avoid duplication of activity, especially consultation
  • Help create better quality services that better meet the needs of citizens and communities
  • Supplement statutory duties on the Council, the Police and the Primary Care Trust to engage and involve people in the design, delivery and review of services
  • Demonstrate that community engagement is not just a buzz word in Brighton & Hove and that there is collective ownership and recognition of its importance.

Attached below is a pdf version of the new Community Engagement Framework for Brighton and Hove, associated background information and a report on the consultation process.

Work is underway to begin implementation of the actions identified during the consultation, and to support the council and other organisations in the city to use the standards set out in the Framework when planning and delivering their own engagement work.

Reading, the Gift That Keeps on Giving. Archived

8th Jun 2009
We all know the importance of reading.  Not only can it be entertaining and help you learn about new things, it is hard to get by these days if you cannot read.

Those of you reading this may not be able to imagine what their life would be like if you could not read simple signs or important documents, but it has been estimated that there is still a large number of adults and young people in Brighton and Hove that are lacking in basic literacy skills.

This strategy aims to make Brighton & Hove a city where:

  • Every child and young person can read
  • Every adult can read
  • Everyone enjoys reading and becomes a regular reader
  • Everyone benefits from the advantages that the ability to read brings
  • Everyone is supported so that any difficulties in learning to read are overcome.

So help the council support people to be able to know the joys of reading by completing our on-line survey.

We are happy to tell you that every person that completes our survey will go into a draw to win a £50 shopping voucher to either Tesco, Asda, or Sainsbury's.

What Fathers Said in the Shed Archived

8th Jun 2009

Think Fathers Campaign ‘Shed Tour' made nine stops to various English Cities during weekends in April and May to record people's views about fatherhood.  It was here on the Brighton Seafront the second weekend in May.

The resulting videos have now been posted by the Think Fathers campaign on their website.  We enjoyed hearing all the Dad's, with different regional accents highlighting the areas they live in, saying pretty much the same things.

"Being a Father can sometimes be tough, but loving your children and playing an important role in their lives means a lot to them."

To view what fathers were saying you can look on the Think Fathers website or on YouTube.
